How is CBAM cost calculated for steel?

Embedded emissions per tonne (verified actuals, or default values by product and origin) × tonnes imported × the year’s phase-in factor × the CBAM certificate price (which tracks the EU ETS), minus any creditable carbon price already paid in the origin country. This calculator runs that per shipment and projects it through 2034.

What does CBAM cost per tonne of steel in 2026?

As a worked example, 10,000 t of HRC from India in 2026 computes to roughly €6.1 per tonne at a €75.28/tCO₂e certificate price: modest because 2026’s phase-in factor is 2.5%. The same cargo’s cost rises steeply toward 2034 as the factor approaches 100%.

Why do verified emissions matter under CBAM?

Without verified data, the levy is assessed on conservative default values: importers pay as if their steel matched the default profile even when actual emissions are lower. Verified actuals below the default translate directly into lower cost per tonne.
